Stylin' With Avril Lavigne
- Date: July/August 2002
- Source: Hannah Guy, Chart Magazine
Between takes for her cameo appearance in treble charger's "Hundred Million" video shoot during a sunny May afternoon, Avril Lavigne is faced with media appearances, fans, questions and even Chart's own Stylin' photo shoot. And after a day of hurry-up-and-wait, it's obvious that the demands are taking their toll. Lavigne looks tired and despite same goofing with the bands, her fleeting smile is increasingly more infrequent and her conversation is awkward and strained. Kinda like a teenager.
"[The shoot] wasn't for me - I had to do a lot of waiting," she admits, while patiently posing for the photographer, here and there finding the incentive to pull out the devil's horns, some fists and an occasional bird.
In fact, Lavigne is well aware the possibility of enormous fame may make it harder to deal with people when she's having a crappy day.
"Maybe I'll just be having a bad day an people will be stopping me..." she says pensively. "I'm really into talking to my fans and getting to know them. And if I'm in a bad mood, I'm not really sure how to deal with it."
But if the radio play for her first single, "Complicated," is any indication, this skater-pop artist will have to get used to the fatigue. Endless press and grueling tours are likely in store for a girl poised to break through any minute.
Regardless, the petite singer is already swamped with praise for her music - along with a physically appealing mix of vulnerability, aggression and a funky penchant for ties - which she wears haphazardly, almost as an afterthought.
"My look is just sorta laid-back," she says, brushing hair from her face. "I don't really care if my clothes are wrinkled or there's a stain on my shirt. Going out on the road, your clothes are dirty." And while she sports the punk scene requisites - studded bracelets and dark eye make-up (and red and black checkered socks) - the dragonfly tattoo is just there for effect.
"I wouldn't get a real tattoo," she says sardonically. "I wanna be a rock star without one... Maybe I'll change my mind and get one in the future..." She pauses before adding, "But for now, it's fake."
