A scan of the latest Billboard 200 album sales chart reveals continued success for such upstart female singer-songwriters as Vanessa Carlton, Norah Jones, and Avril Lavigne. Each currently boasts debut albums that remain in the top 30--Carlton's Be Not Nobody is at Number 30, Jones's Come Away With Me at Number 21, and Lavigne's Let Go still holding strong at Number Four.
In the case of Carlton and Lavigne, their coinciding success has been accompanied by a growing bond between the two that began with they were both working at the same New York studio. Carlton remembers the first time Lavigne entered the room:
"She's so adorable. I remember, she came fresh in from Canada. And she's just like this wide-eyed girl, she had cornrows," Carlton says. "She's very sweet and, you know, I told (her), 'Call me if she had any questions,' you know? I just feel like kind of her older sister or something."
Carlton joins the Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind on the road in Phoenix beginning July 29 while Lavigne performs next in New York on July 31. Jones, meanwhile, is currently serving as the support act for the Dave Matthews Band's tour. That show appears for the third consecutive night Thursday (July 18) at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey.
