Isnt it a little un-punk to claim punk? A real punk is punk on the inside and it shows on the outside & they dont need to Advertise it... If you like Avril's music thats one thing and its perfectly ok... but i dont see how anyone could like avril as a person... if you have EVER heard actual punk rock then There is no possible way you can respect avril... shes using the "skater punk" image to make millions of dollars and all the little teeny boppers are eating it up... As far as Avril the "skater" I've seen interviews [yes thats plural] where she said she just learned to ollie after skating for 5 years... if you have any knowledge of skateboarding you'd know that although it takes dedication to learn tricks It cant take you 5 years to ollie unless you have a complete and total lack of dedication. I have heard people compare Avril to Blink182... and thats completely unfair blink182 had 2 or 3 Cd's and tried despiratly to make it in the punk sence before they got big..[and they deserve it!] Avril had one song... that isnt even punk.. and suddenly shes signed to a major label? at least Blink182 plays pop-punk... i think you should be ashamed of yourself if you respect Avril for her lie'n and distortion of what it means to be punk... Clothes dont make you punk... you make you punk...

Then why does HER OWN website call her a "skater punk"? She doesnt have any say over that? and i wasnt sure if you could read... anythings possible if you like Avril... how can anyone whos into "Real Punk" Like Avril? I mean seriously if she didnt wanna be labeled punk she wouldnt be.. and those are clothes she's "wear to school or out to the mall" So why does she have to get new ones? were the "punk" clothes she had not enough? I watched the making the video [i like to check things out before i judge them] sjhe had her stylist get her clothes...

First off, typing your post in a huge font and bold isn't going to make us pay more attention to your words.
Secondly, Avril is identified as a skater punk, yes, but this doesn't make her the kind of punk you're thinking of. Besides, she's not proclaiming herself as the next Tony Hawk; she merely professes to identify with that particular subculture.
I am a lover of old-school punk. I had my days. My favorite band to this day is Bad Religion. NOFX, Agent Orange, Rancid, DK, The Red Aunts, Pennywise, the Vandals = Punk. I saw Blink 182 before they were signed opening for the Voodoo Glow Skulls, rolled my eyes and muttered to myself: "Hooray, another Green Day clone."
I'll admit I'm not satisfied with the polished pop punk that drowns the airwaves these days, but then, Avril isn't New Found Glory or Sum 41. She's just a girl with a great voice and something to say. When I think of Avril, I don't think of punk, and I don't think of any false claims.
I just think of a hot chick whose songs I dig. Is that so bad? Maybe you need to trip and defend the roots and definition of punk somewhere else, as it's not needed here. And since when did real punk need defending, anyway?
Peace.

Just thought i'd put this song...its from lagwagon *a punk band* believe it or not...
Know It All
Look at the world in disbelief
You used to follow - now you lead
College has enlightened you
And you are proud to be different
And like different bands - different types
You ain't nobody's fool
It's like certain bands remind you of someone you hated
cuz they didn't wea the right clothing
and there's only one true fashion
Alot of the bands on college charts are great bands
Until they get signed then you hate them
It's such bullshit - you used to love them you hypocrite
Know it all, know it all
Did you really listen to that song?
Could you ever write what you call wrong?
Know it all
I remember you and I listening to bands that we liked
Only the songs mattered to you
But now you're a D.J. and preaching that hype
"Corporate rock sucks"
"you know, College radio enlightens you"
It's supposed to serve as a means to expose new bands
without prejudice, but it makes no sense
Safe harbor for the underground
'Til the alternative becomes a popular sound
The bands are good 'til they make enough cash
to eat food and get a pad
Then they've sold out and their musics cliche
Cuz talents exclusive to bands without pay
Know it all, know it all
Did you really listen to that song?
Could you ever write what you call wrong?
Know it all
What if avril got signed to Epitaph...then you'd be saying wow this chicks so hot and she's punk too...but whatever i made you read a song...
I'm punker than you cuz I don't listen to that mainstream punk, like emo or hardcore or pop-punk...I listen to real punk
This is from another message board but i thought it was funny

i hate when people do this. why do people bother coming to an avril fan site to try and make some converts?! it's not gonna work. a quick fact - avril would only have been skating about a year and a half at most. even then, she still sux, but she'll be the first to admit that. and i don't think punk when i think of her. i think she's different, but not a punk. i could go on for days about this so i better stop now before i start rambling and getting carried away.

Calm down there...and yes they are punk bands no matter what your opinion of them is it just doesn't change the fact that pop-punk is still punk
And if you don't like them good for you but don't try to tell me your punker than me because you listen to music that nobody else does...and that is what makes something punk right?
And don't double post it just aggravates me...oh yeah i was already aggravated, so double post away
I guess we should expect attacks like this every day
Don't worry i defend my girl

Without attempting to get into a flame war--because that's not what I came to these forums for--you would have to be out of your mind not to acknowledge NOFX as a punk band. NOFX arguably did influence most of the pop punk bands out there, today, but they set a definitive style that has as yet been unrivaled, IMO. Social Distortion is another such band.
Before you think you know anything about a genre of music, maybe you should listen to your elders. I'm guessing you weren't born until well after the true era of punk.
