View Full Version : Thirteen

Has anyone seen this movie? It's about a thirteen-year-old girl named Tracy (Evan Rachel Woods) who gets influenced by the most popular girl, Evie (Nikki Reed). Tracy gets led into the world of boys, drugs, piercings, etc. It's totally real and it's harsh but I thought it was incredible. It's based on Nikki's experiences, and she co-wrote the screenplay.

The way they portrayed it was amazing, I can't say this is a movie I would enjoy watching again and again, just for the simple fact it's so sad, but it is an awesome movie.
Crystal

^ It's sad, but I've watched it three times since yesterday. It's incredible. I think it's a teenage girl's right of passage to watch this movie.

I just watched the movie. I have to say, it was alright and the acting was really good, but... where did all the hype come in? It wasn't THAT good. It wasn't THAT realistic. I mean sure, there's little crackwhore teenagers all over the US, and at some point they all appear on Ricki Lake. But come on now, "Cute shirt." "Thanks." "Cute belt." "Thanks. Call me after school, we'll go shopping on Melrose." Nobody DOES that! That's not how you make friends. The general plot was believable, but the way it was written and the sequence of events was really, really missing something. Namely continuity and realism.
Crystal
02-25-2004, 06:24 PM
^ Notice how Evie's cell phone number was unreachable. And when Tracy got to that store, Evie and Astrid laughed and called her a loser... until she stole something. Then they became friends. So it didn't happen immediately.
And I thought the movie was realistic. But it wasn't as hard-hitting as everyone thought it was. So they smoked and did drugs and gave guys blowjobs. Big deal.

Maybe it didnt happen exactly that way, but it's a true story, written by a 15 year old girl (girl who played Evie)....I agree the movie wasn't THAT good, but it wasn't unrealistic...it seems as if it might be in my eyes, but I've never been exposed to anything close to that. I'm a bit sheltered, but I have the knowledge that things like that do happen, rare or not, they do.

I know that that kind of thing DOES happen. I've watched enough Ricki Lake to know that. :P
And I know it was a true story and that Nikki Reed wrote it (she's a surprisingly good actress for someone who, to my knowledge, wasn't even into acting before.)
and Crystal: yeah, I noticed that. still though, Tracy didn't even seem to think it was remotely odd that Evie just out of nowhere offered up her cell. in fact, that whole scene seemed sort of like Tracy had a crush on Evie.
It wasn't a BAD movie. It's just really obvious that a 15-year-old wrote it. There was a lot missing.
I for one would have liked a little more closure at the end. And for Tracy to ACTUALLY do some bad things. OH NO she smokes pot and (incorrectly) huffs aerosol fumes. HOW DARE she perform oral sex and get piercings! What is HAPPENING to middle-America?
I dont think its been released in the Uk. It looks quite good infact, though It might sicken me, Because I am A boy, and If there is nude scenes of boys in..*Shudders*.
But it sounds like a powerful and good movie!
PunkyMalone
02-26-2004, 12:15 PM
There's not nude scenes of anyone. I mean, yeah, ok, you see Tracy's mom's boobs once. That's all. They don't actually HAVE sex with anyone. You see them sitting on guys' laps kissing them, strip down to a bra, and then the rest is implied through dialogue in the next scene.
The actors are all probably under 18 anyway, so nude scenes would be illegal. ;)

Evie wanted Mel to adopt her, but when both Mel and Tracy said no since Brooke was back, she got upset. She turned on Tracy and pretended not to know her. And then she turned in Tracy's fake I.D. and showed both Brooke and Mel all of the drugs, money, etc. which was in Tracy's room. This was all revenge. In short, you shouldn't trust people like Evie because they're not your real friends. Now Tracy has to take the seventh grade all over again.
I think the screaming part was just Tracy letting go.

I must be going crazy then, I was sure she was nominated for an oscar.
Maybe she did have alot of problems, all movies are exaggerated, but I still thought Thirteen was more realistic than most movies, and I like that.
Rejected Dreams

I am pretty sure about the MTV Award. Not sure about the Oscar, don't think so tho.
The movie was really exagerated, and too realistic. But it was ok. I mean, that is my opinion.
Edit: She is a good dramatic actress, I'll have to admit that.

I totally agree with you, Adrie. I watched it not so long ago and what I most disliked aboot it was that I found it a lil' too over exagerated... But the actress was good at it. I think the movie was OK.

I think that it shouldn't be thirteen, because I mean...do 13 year olds really do all that stuff? I didn't even start thinking about things like that till I was 14 and I'm only 15 and I still haven't done some of the stuff in the movie (and don't plan on doinf it for a while...). I think it would depend on what kind of person you where and what type of upbringing you had, where you live, school ect. But yes it is pretty hard to believe that they're only 13.

The movie is all about Nikki Reed's {Evie} life, she co-wrote the whole movie with the director Catherine Hardwicke. It was origionally meant to be a comedy about starting Junior High. But it turned out to be more of a drama, focusing mainly on the events of Nikki Reed's life as a thirteen year old
