Well, it's kind of hard to say what the hardest language is unless you know about every single language. I'm sort of starting to study Russian, which is pretty hard... or maybe it's just that those damn lessons are filled with holes and inconsistency.

I don't know why you list Japanese with Chinese. They are two very different languages. Their writing systems might both be hard, but other than that I've heard that Japanese is pretty easy. And Chinese would be hard for me. I tried to learn it once, but my mom refused to help me. **growls**

The only language there which I know virtually nothing about is Arabic. I lost interest in it in 8th grade when I forced myself to listen to the most retchid music ever for school... in Arabic.

A lot of people say that Finnish is the hardest language. The colloquial speech seems to be drastically different from the formal.

Hahaha... French is the easiest language to me. For a native English speaker, it should be relatively easy. The grammar is very much like English, and the genders are nothing compared to other languages. Many languages have three genders: Icelandic, German, Russian. Icelandic is really scary.

Actually most of those languages derived from Latin. The only languages that didn't were japanese and chinese and other languages that aren't on that list. So how can you compare?

It's not easy to choose, it depends on where your strong points lay on what for each person the most difficult language is,
I say Chinese, but then espescially the wrinting, because they use a different way to do that then in the western society

Of the languages I've learned/tried to learn, French and Welsh are the hardest.

al_Lou - Japanese and Chinese are not like Spanish with Italian or Portuguese. The three examples you gave are all Romance languages, closely related. Japanese is not related to any known language. The only thing is that the Japanese took the Chinese writing characters and created a unique system which doesn't correspond with Chinese.

I know a little Chinese, but I don't know how to write it. For one thing, I can't figure out how to get the Chinese keyboard to work.

Snagg3r - As far as I know, Arabic is not derived from Latin. And BTW, Germanic languages are not technically derived from Latin, but they have been greatly influenced by it.

That was a bit confusing also. Try periods and commas. They may help you. I think English may be one of the hardest languages because of the special spellings and variations it has.
