It's really hard to tell who's right. Most probably the guy is just too shy to admit that he likes you right in front of you, but felt more comfortable saying it to one of your friends.

But why wait for a guy to like you to make a move. If you like him ask him out, make the first move and dont wait for him to tell you he likes you, as it may never happen.

Think about whether if they're right, it could just be a game where they want you to get excited for nothing, but listen to your heart, who might be right, guys really deny when they like someone, or ask him how he feels about you, get him alone and just talk to him, privately.
