Pretty similar to the "What CD's have you bought recently?" except the obvious difference in the title, one's of which you've downloaded.

Anyway I recently downloaded the Sublime Tribute album, its pretty damn good actually some pretty good covers on there.

Man, none of those bands are making money as it is, the least you could do is buy a record.

I don't download full albums. If it's good enough to download I'm all for supporting the band.

The last full-length album I downloaded was Tell All Your Friends by Taking Back Sunday and I didn't even download it, I burned it from my friend... then I bought it.

If you guys are looking for some new music to download, downlaod this album:

Shine Honesty (http://www.yoshigaki.net/shinehonesty.zip).zip (57.4mb)

It's the latest from Taylor Muse (formerly of The Connotations and Eisley). Slightly more piano-based than his previous work, it's a fine piece of art. Considering he's handing out the CDs for free (and the fact that he gave me permission to do this), it's completely legal, it's supporting the artist, and it's great music. If you don't want to wait around for a sixty meg file to download and find out that you don't like it, try these two.

The Emasculated Man and the City that Swallowed Him (http://home.comcast.net/%7Eonewingedangel02/emasculatedman.mp3).mp3

C'mon Punks, your not serious right?

As an owner of a small record label I say fuck the music industry, download all you can, its all those big labels that make it so damn hard to get anything actually decent out there, they pay radio stations to not play independant records you know, or thats how it works out anyway.

And if that still puts guilt on your mind send the artist $1 in the post, its sure as hell more money than they would of got out of the sale of any CD, it works out around $0.11 or somthing stupid, and yes the rest goes to the big guy at BMG or somthing, I mean god there's only about 5 major lables in the world in effect, because they're all owned by someone or other.

But on the other hand I do support bands on smaller labels like House Hold Name & Deck Cheese, but hey, they sell me cheap fair priced CD's and support the artists how it should be done.

Anyway I recently downloaded OPM - Menace to Sobriety, haha oh man it's been a long time since I heard these playing, deary me.

PS. "You are all the reason I don't have a job in what I went to school for, you jackasses." If your reffering to a job in the music industry there then quit complaining and get your ass out there and do somthing... you know... start your own label up or somthing, it wont be just handed to you on a plate, I've worked long and hard for 3 years, and I've got 3 albums to show for it, and 2 in production.

Buddy, don't try to tell me how the music industry works, because you haven't told me anything I don't know already. I'm still going to support lesser-known and independent musicians by actually buying their records.

Let's also not forget that although the artist gets about dick all from record sales, if they DON'T sell records they're not on the label very long, and it's just even more incentive for labels to stick with the crappy generic music they've been putting out so far, because it sells, and when something new comes out everyone downloads it and no one buys it so it's not worth the label's time or money to put it out.

Because even Sony/BMG and Warner Brothers only make profit on one out of every ten albums they release.

Downloading is probably the best promotional tool in recent years. And when you have a dedicated fan base it can work wonders on your sales - look at Wilco, who released an entire album for free download because they had no money to put it out... then when they did, it still sold fairly well considering it was independent.

And don't tell me to "quit complaining" and get my ass out there and do something, you have no idea how hard I've tried to look for a job. I've even abandoned all hope of actually having anything to do with the recorded music side of things, but live music (ie, promoters :notworthy ) and artist management are also proving very unfruitful right now for me.

~Johno~

Your talking crap, over a quarter of every CD sold on average is profit to the label. Dont want to piss on your parade but I doubt you'll land yourself a job anywhere of any significance in the music industry without already being in the music industry. Two or whatever years you did at school is pretty much rendered useless, granted you will have learnt many things but it aint just what you know its who you know.

Main lesson here go do some promotion work, set up a promotion company, book some gigs, start a record label up, pay for your bands recording costs with the money made from the gigs... there you go, your apart of the music industry now, and hey it didnt turn out that hard at all, and thats as close as your gonna get for the time being.

The thing is even if Bertelsmann did ring me up tommorow and offer me a job, or want to buy my label out (not thats ever going to happen) I have principles, and because I love music that much I'd turn them straight down. I dont think the music industry should be about ripping consumers and artists off, labels taking the ownership of the recorded tracks, making it hard for independants to get anywhere, but hey despite you knowing everything if you think thats the way forward knock yourself out.

Exactly, its just out of order, fuck Clear Channel. The only way we're going to get round this monopoly isn't going to be exactly easy, but is possible, and P2P is the answer. By working on some kind of flat rate monthly fee of which the money is divided up between artists depending on their popularity minus server bills etc, this means if the artist is popular, then that artist gets what he/she deserves This also means small time artists get the chance to enter into the industry cutting out them corporate middle men. So another iTunes you say? no infact its not, because iTunes rips the fuck out of artists.

Your talking crap, over a quarter of every CD sold on average is profit to the label.

Well that depends on who you talk to, I guess.

Dont want to piss on your parade but I doubt you'll land yourself a job anywhere of any significance in the music industry without already being in the music industry. Two or whatever years you did at school is pretty much rendered useless, granted you will have learnt many things but it aint just what you know its who you know.

Please stop insulting me by assuming I don't know any of that, or that I haven't done anything or don't know anyone.

I'm not aiming to get a high-position job right off the bat. At the moment I'm looking to get a foot in the door any way possible. Plus, I've already done an internship with a promoter, who is actually pretty well-known and respected in the Toronto area - they mostly do smaller shows at >1000 capacity venues, but they've got an excellent rapport with The Killers and have done every gig they've ever played here, including their most recent at the Molson Amphitheatre (cap. 16,000, sold out). The production manager knows just about everybody (and I'm not exaggerating). One of my teachers from school is the president of the urban music association of Canada and is the biggest schmoozer I have ever met. Okay, so I don't know any label presidents or bigwigs - I'm well aware that connections are everything in this business and don't think I haven't been networking.

Been there, done that, and I really don't appreciate you trying to belittle what I know and have done all over a stupid debate about downloading. I don't like it. I don't do it. That was my only point.

I don't know everything and I never claimed to know everything. Don't insinuate that I have no principles because I happen to not agree with downloading full albums. The only reason I feel like that is because some of my favourite bands happen to be on major labels, mini-majors, or indies owned by majors, and I'm going to support them any way I can, whether it be buying their CDs (because ultimately, one person boycotting major record labels isn't going to bring them down), buying obsessive amounts of merch (really, you should see some of the worthless shit I have - we're talking MxPx flipflops, here), or buying concert tickets.

My first comment was an off-the-cuff half-sarcastic remark about why I personally do not download and I truly do not appreciate your replies. Normally I don't bother getting offended by things said on a message board but you're insulting my intelligence about the only thing I have ever wanted to do with my life, and that is not cool with me.

Exactly, its just out of order, fuck Clear Channel. The only way we're going to get round this monopoly isn't going to be exactly easy, but is possible, and P2P is the answer. Finally, something we agree on - perfect solution in theory, but will it actually work? Maybe if people stop throwing the idea around and actually work on bringing it into fruition.

Normally I don't bother getting offended by things said on a message board but you're insulting my intelligence about the only thing I have ever wanted to do with my life, and that is not cool with me.Well all I'm saying is you know the facts, and from the first line of my post in this little debate "C'mon Punks, your not serious right?" I think you'll see I was suprised to see someone like yourself actually serious about not downloading and heading in the music industrys direction.

Stop moaning for gods sake, you sounds like a 14 year old pretty girl, sorry but thats how it is, if you cant take someone debating your views online, of which the person didnt know you'd done an internship, didnt know you liked to buy crap, didnt know you got so offended, didnt know you were given different statistics in school, basically everytime you've said "Buddy, don't try to tell me how the music industry works" or "Please stop insulting me by assuming I don't know any of that" did I ever say you didnt know, and did you ever say you did? You get the picture.

And I'm glad you agree on that but there's one thing you didnt obviously know about http://www.downhillbattle.org/, where the hell have you been the past uh, 2 years? so dont insult the people throwing that idea round and working towards it.

So hey why dont you write up a big massive list of everything you know so I can check before I say somthing, that way I can avoid insulting your inteligence.

You started off debating my views and that's fine.

It wasn't until you started telling me to get off my ass and 'do something' to get into the industry that I got pissed off. No, you didn't know I'd already done an internship and have been trying, but you automatically assumed that I hadn't and started talking as if I was a complete naive idiot. I don't appreciate being talked down to. That's all I'm saying.

Forget it. This is a waste of time. You're all for downloading, I think it's a great promotional tool but am not about to download a full album (I also happen to like the artwork). We disagree. End of story.

And no, I wasn't aware of www.downhillbattle.org (http://www.downhillbattle.org), so I withdraw my oh-so-insulting comments that someone should stop talking and do something.

Although at this point in the game, it looks like all THEY'RE doing is talking anyway, albeit with slightly more sound ideas and concepts than most of their counterparts have had. It'll be nice to see something come of that, although I still personally like CDs.

I think it's a great promotional tool but am not about to download a full album (I also happen to like the artwork).

Then, there are the albums which are impossible to buy (because artists are not a part of the industry, they are not on a label, they have little money). The albums which are only available digitally. The albums without artwork. Such as this one. (Download it. It's good)

Death in a Bottle
08-13-2005, 02:40 AM

DearestHelpless
08-13-2005, 02:46 AM

Death in a Bottle
08-13-2005, 02:51 AM
Maybe I decided I dont' want to play it anymore.

DearestHelpless
08-13-2005, 02:57 AM
...No. You have to. I want to hear it.

Death in a Bottle
08-13-2005, 03:07 AM
Nope. I don't feel like it anymore.

DearestHelpless
08-13-2005, 03:13 AM
But Taylor... I want you to. And if you're not, why did you pick it and what's the purpose/meaning/whatever of you playing it for me? These are things I have to know.

Death in a Bottle
08-13-2005, 03:21 AM
You know I'll play it. But dont' look too much into all of that. It's not a big deal... I just was learnign the song and thought, hey, this is kind of fitting for Lauren in a way. That's all.

DearestHelpless
08-13-2005, 03:25 AM
That's fine. I still want to hear it.

Death in a Bottle
08-13-2005, 03:30 AM
I know. I'm just saying dont' get all excited about it being some huge thing or anything.

DearestHelpless
08-13-2005, 03:36 AM
I know that. That doesn't make me want to hear it any less though.

Death in a Bottle
08-13-2005, 03:40 AM
I know. And you'll hear it.

DearestHelpless
08-13-2005, 03:46 AM

This thread is stupid. So, in order to fix that...

Lauren is a slut.
Well no, your wrong, this happens to be one of the very few threads on this board that serves a purpose.

Although your second point may have truth to it though.

KingJJP
08-13-2005, 09:32 AM
And what is the purpose to this thread?

quit that
08-13-2005, 11:31 AM
The thread, just like the one about purchasing, has no real significance. Johno's technical spam argument with Punky (funny, because she's the mod), probably had more significance than the shit idea of a thread this is. However, that is technically not part of the thread, as it was off topic.

And thats what gave it it's purpose, from that I wonder how many ill-informed people read that and now are now aware of bad ways of the music industry, that piracy is the only way to take the corp out of music, and maybe some clicked through to the site I posted. If this is the case then this thread has served a purpose.

*cough* http://www.downhillbattle.org/
