I've tried putting a CD in my CD ROM drive and nothing happens. I've no idea why this has happened. Is there anything I can do on the computer to check to see whats happened like settings or something.
Don't know if this is relevant or not but my computer was taken away by someone yesterday and they added an extra 75GB of hard disk space. That new drive is my new D drive. This shouldn't have done anything to my E drive.
Appreciate any help on this.

Typically, people use the D: drive and E: drive for CD/DVD-ROMs, so it must have been the person who installed your new harddrive who messed things up.
To fix this you have to go into the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) of your computer. To get there, you have to hit your computer's "Setup Key" before window's loads, just after turning on the power. Usually it says "Press [del] for Setup" or something along those lines. If you don't know what button it is, it is ususally Delete, F2, or F12.
Once you're in there, be careful, this is one of the most important parts of your computer and you could do major damage if you change things.
For your drive problem, make sure the E: is pointing to a CD-ROM device, and that it is bootable (if this is your only CD-ROM on your machine.
Also while you're in there you should make sure your harddrive is installed well. If it is your second harddrive and you don't load windows off of it, it should be a "slave". I'd also be tempted to change the letter of the drive to H:, but you may just want to stick to basics.

I suspect when he's been putting that new hard drive in the ide cable to the CD-ROM drive has come loose, just open the case up and make sure all the wires are pushed into the back of the CD-ROM and make sure the other end on the motherboard is secure. I'd suggest doing that before playing round in the BIOS because if this is the case your not going to get anywhere in the BIOS anyway.

Drew you'd hate my setup, as I have Harddrives C:, D:, G:, and V:. CD = E:, DVD = F: :p

Yes that setup would drive me nuts :P I prefer things orderly:
C: main hard drive
D: DVD-ROM
E: DVD-RW
F: removable peripherals (digital camera, external HD, USB key)
then,
H: second hard drive :p

No A: drive ey :P.
My drives go A: floopy drive, C: & D: HDs, E: & F: CD/DVD drives, W: (web dev), G: (graphic dev) & M: (music) as virtual drives which act as shortcuts, as for my digital camera and USB dongle I've never really noticed what drive they appear on, I seem to think they appear on I: for some reason.

Anyway, my computers sorted. There was a plug that wasn't plugged into the CD ROM drive as Johno suggested. Appreciate all the help.
