Avril Lavigne in this months Harper's Bazaar.
Is this the new Lavigne?

It seems so. Avril has undergone another new look, this time the model look. Appearing in Harper's Bazaar Magazine we get to see the new remixed Lavigne. Wearing a black crystal-embroidered Gucci dress with puffed cap sleeves and her blonde shampoo-commercial-ready hair, it looks like she's found another route of fame.

She's sold 23 million albums worldwide, received eight Grammy nominations and now feels after a year of touring that she should start some bigger plans "I was on tour for a year, and I started thinking about what I wanted to do next. I wanted to start doing fashion and acting." And so we have it, she has, with the all new look Lavigne.

The new Lavigne wants to walk the runway and do adverts for high-end products "I'm not 6 feet tall, but I know I can do that" She has already started her acting career it has been said, but she does however want to be "really careful" about what she does so she doesn't come off "chessy".

Also planning her wedding to fiance Deryck Whibley is one of the next things on her agenda "Everything has come super fast for me, a lot faster than for most people" she said "I don't have the average lifestyle. I just know in my heart I'm doing the right thing."

It's the evolution of the tomboy. I've gone through this myself...but not quite to the extent that she has/wishes to.

Yeah...

damn that aint rite....she should stay the same. shes my role model and i guess u could call me a wanna-be, ut its not just for me...alot of ppl like her the old way...why did she change is my question.

~Johno~
02-04-2006, 05:10 AM
She changed because shes 22 now, not 16. Its pretty obvious really, does your mom act like shes 16 still?

I dont have anything against role-models, but I in no way promote them. Taking them to the extreme is just... well sometimes you need to be your own role-model, if the younger Avril is yours then hey, just carry on as you are, questioning why she changed is completely up to her, I guess you just have to deal with it.

Personally I dont care about her change, I still listen to her music and thats what its about right?

I thought she was beautiful as the old avril, However she is just as gorgeous now. the look has changed, but not the person. She still respects herself, and does what she wants. If modelling and acting is the way she wants to go, i wish her the best and look forward to seeing her on the big screen.
Like a rose blossoming in the sun, she gets more beautiful everyday.

^ That last line cracked me up...erm, sorry. I guess I read it in a cheeseball sort of way in my head.

And what's up with the 'old Avril' stuff? She wasn't old, she was young. Yeah, yeah, I know you don't mean 'old' as in 'her age', but still--it's silly to expect her to remain that way for as long as she is in the limelight.

And she has a rather nice profile in that picture. Random observation on my part..

I kind of think it's horseshit that she could be a runway model just because she's famous while some other girl could be pretty much the prettiest girl ever but would have a hard time getting in to modeling because she's 5'2".

Meh, it's just modelling, I don't care that much. heh.

lamer than lame was right, once i re-read it... the last line did sound pretty cheesy. I'm just trying to point out that she is growing up and with that, there is going to be changes. Its ridiculous for people to think she will always be the skater girl/tomboy as she matures. She was good looking then she is good looking now, just a lot more mature with it.

i remember back in the day when avril said i'm never gonna act. i can't act. and boom now she's acting and modeling??....i don't know how i feel about this...
oh well it's her life. i still like her music, but i definitely don't go out of my way to read about her much anymore cause she's just changed so much and i don't know how i feel about it...when i read it, it makes me mad, even though i can see where she's coming from cause i used to be the biggest tomboy, and now i'm just kinda straying away from it. so i understand how she's changing in the sense from tomboy to not so tomboy...but i guess...it just sorta makes me mad to see her do it, althought that makes me a hypocrit (saying it's okay for me to do it, but not her) -- but i'm human so it's unavoidable
hmm...i guess i'll accept the new look and miss the old one *shrugs* sorry i'm done ranting now.

How about other pictures from the same series?
http://avril-images.org/thumbnails.php?album=241 (http://avril-images.org/thumbnails.php?album=241)
Yeah, Avril Lavigne in high heels used to be something impossible. So now stop listening to her music just because she's put on that dress? I don't see any trouble if a pretty woman decides to look more as a woman. She'll have to change her style and behavior anyway. You can't really expect her to be a skater girl when she's 30 years old. Even in 25. And as these recent events show she's started changing already. I agree that it's not a problem till she continues composing great songs. It's music that matters.

I have a strong unexplainable passion of hate for Hillary Duff, .

Me too, hence the sigh.

Anyways, my reason for comparing are because Hilary Stuff is doing this too...acting, singing, clothing line, what's next? I find it really, really annoying when famous people move into a totally other genre...I know they are linked (artsy is as artsy does) but still. As someone says, there's probably someone out there who is a lot more talented and could actually use a job for something other than bolstering their extravagant lives. I hate multi-tasking celebrities...I really do. Except if they're doing charity. Then multi tasking is fine.

I think it's a good thing that she is changing...cause otherwise we would get bored of her.

She certainly looks better in the Harper's Bazaar than she did when she her first record was out. Okay. No wonder... I mean, that's the difference between make-up and fashion professionals and a sixteen-year-old girl, no matter how good you thought her taste was. She's growing up, she's improving. That's right. But I don't think that's what bothers most people who feel frustrated/disappointed by her change...

It's more the whole state of mind which is behind it. She used to pretend to have some kind of attitude... she thought, she even said she wouldn't end up doing like everybody else, because she wanted to have it her way. Only, it happens that her way is just the same as that of every other sickening mainstream celebrity... She has no intrinsic originality. So although she's still doing what she really wants (but who doesn't? who in the rich and famous world doesn't do exactly what they want?), eventually we only see her do what everybody else does.

She blatantly likes success, she likes to have pictures taken of herself, she likes to think she's pretty. Great. And then? She's a goddamn empty character. She's just an image; she's always been only that. Except that she used to aim at something more, at least it seemed so.

Stop it with the "she's 22 now, not 16 anymore, so it's normal" horseshite. It's not normal. It's understandable if you will, nothing more. No, my mom doesn't look nor behaves like she was 16, but she didn't do what Avril does when she was 22 either, thank God for that. So yes, the girl looks "wow" on these pictures, from a strictly aesthetical viewpoint. But she also looks goddamn depressing, when you know who she is and where she comes from.

A few comments, if you don't mind.

...she likes to have pictures taken of herself, she likes to think she's pretty...
And she’s pretty – her performance in Torino shows that she’s become one of the most beautiful women in the world.

…She has no intrinsic originality…
Her music does have originality and that will do.

She's a goddamn empty character. She's just in image; she's always been only that.
She could’ve been only an image if not her two great albums. If we assume that Avril is totally manufactured (i.e. she took part in creating her albums only nominally) then the change in her behavior and style won’t affect her music and therefore doesn’t matter.
If it’s Avril’s personality that is the origin of her music then her music will change and the third album will show the direction.

Except that she used to aim at something more, at least it seemed so.
Yes, it seemed so. And now it seems different. See? The main problem is that any of us doesn’t know Avril personally (or you do?) and, therefore, all our judgments are made from her public behavior (that in my personal opinion hasn’t been what to be proud of) and her outstanding music.

And If it’s Avril’s behavior that makes her so popular, than her fans will be really disappointed. But I doubt that so many people (at least 15 million) bought her album(s) only because of her “try to shut me up” style. By the way, reading numerous opinions on Avril, I’ve noticed an interesting tendency. Most people who express negative attitude to Avril concentrate mainly on her behavior and on that “she’s not a true punk” while her supporters speak much more on her music. In my opinion, her audience could have been many times larger if not her image. But many people after listening on the radio to her “Complicated”, “Skateê boi”, “He wasn’t” or “Don’t tell me” and after hearing about some of her acts think that all her music is just like that, although it’s not.

So, now Avril has all opportunities of becoming even more popular. Not because of her “Harper's Bazaar” pictures (rather unnatural if you ask me) but because of her distinctive music and singing skills, that have improved significantly recently.

I do not normally post my opinions on these forums, but usually read them in search of entertainment. However, your little e-squabble was enough to provoke my opinion.

I feel that there is far too much concern with whether or not Avril has a good/bad image, or if she is being true to herself or her music or her goals. Avril Lavigne is the product of forums like these, the internet, and television. She is only famous because you want her to be. Her image is only important because we enphasize that it is. Comments like "she looked hotter in Glamour than she did in Maxim" are only hurting anyones chances of caring about anything important: her music.

I do like Avril's music, though I do feel that it is not timeless, and will not be remembered in 10 years. Yes, there will be a third album, but I doubt there will be a fourth, seeing as she has been overshadowed by newer acts. Ashlee Simpson has a very similar sound and image to Avril and the media has noticed, without noticing Avril's absence. Musically I feel that once she gained a little more compositional control over her music in the second album, it was not as strong as the first. It doesn't have a solid flow, and a lot of the songs are weak. Avril is a product of a good record label, pretty face, and being in the right place at the right time. Even her performance at the Olympics was not really up to par. She sounded like a country singer.

It probably wont be an opinion that is respected by the avrilstar regulars, but I feel it's an opinion that isn't often enough voiced. Avril's actions are none of our business. If she changes her goals and looks, it doesn't matter if we "like her old look better." I thought the point in having a website in tribute to somebody would be to pay tribute to her. Do you think she would want to read that a bunch of 12 year olds think she's hotter with the racoon eyes or that her relationship with Deryk won't last. None of this is important because it's her life. Not ours.
